The Last Word

THE LAST WORD: While the nation has been obsessed with the election, what were you doing?

Lucy Harper, Communications Manager, Society for Applied Microbiology
While the nation has been obsessed with the election… I have been enjoying the election-related satire and distracting others attention away from the election for a split second to offer participation in our new workshop on Science and the Media for delegates at our Summer Conference in Brighton. I’m hoping they’ll welcome the distraction so much that they’ll say 'yes'… so far so good.

Laura Nelson, Communications Manager, Human Tissue Authority
While the nation has been obsessed with the election… I have been surprised there has been no let up in work, despite hopes the cabinet office rules would give us a month’s holiday.

Becky Purvis, Policy and Public Affairs Manager, AMRC
While the nation has been obsessed with the election… I have been mostly obsessed with the election, science-geek spotting among the candidates and painting my nails politically right on colours.   (yes I have invested in some rather fetching daffodil yellow!).

Will Greenacre, Science Information Officer, Science Media Centre
While the nation has been obsessed with the election, I have been… alternately obsessed with and bored by the election, and dealing with a cloud of media stories generated by volcanic ash, which has threatened to obscure election coverage at times. And staying on alert for any further eruptions.

Laure Thomas, Chief Press Officer, Science & Innovation, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS)
While the nation has been obsessed with the election, I have been... obsessed with the election. Aside from some unexpected work around volcanic ash, I've mostly been doing prep work to ensure incoming ministers, whoever they may be, have what they need to hit the ground running.

Helen Jamison, Senior Press Officer, Science Media Centre
While the nation has been obsessed with the election... I have been stranded in Iceland because of volcanic ash, while my colleagues pondered the point of purdah.

Craig Brierley, Senior Media Officer, Wellcome Trust
While the nation has been obsessed with the election... on extended leave in Tokyo, courtesy of a volcanic ash cloud.

Simon Wilde, Associate Director - Public Affairs, National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
While the nation has been obsessed with the election… I have been obsessively following the hilarious Malcolm Tucker’s election briefing in the Guardian. The only columnist who tells it like it is (with extra swearwords).

Claire Bithell, Senior Media Advisor, Human Tissue Authority
While the nation has been obsessed with the election… I have been making use of the quiet to finish off projects ready to move to my new job working on mental health research at the Science Media Centre.

Wonder why we didn’t ask you? If you would like to answer future ‘last word’ questions, please email us.
