Stempra Annual General Meeting

Thanks to the Science Media Centre team for hosting this year’s AGM.

The evening was not without excitement, with a vote for new committee members and a star turn from Becky Purvis navigating through the changes to Stempra’s constitution.

The evening was introduced in style by our Chair, Katrina Nevin-Ridley who summarised our aims for the upcoming year: "We will continue to deliver a range of professionally relevant events and networking opportunities both in London and throughout the UK where possible; building on our achievements and continuing to attract speakers of the highest calibre."

The committee vote resulted in continued service for our treasurer Robbie Walker, officers Tara Wormersley and Judith Moore, and a new officer; Ed Sykes.

The new constitution can be read here although a couple of points need to be clarified and will be presented for discussion next year.

Science and the Media - Securing the Future:

In January this year a report on 'Science and the Media – Securing the Future' was published. Commissioned by the Department for Business, Information and Skills as part of the UK Science and Society strategy, the working group was chaired by Fiona Fox of the Science Media Centre and the report draws on research from Cardiff University into the health of science news reporting in the UK.

As well as the future of science journalism, the working group focussed on other themes including: training for non-science journalists, science programmes on TV and openness and transparency. A number of firm recommendations were put forward by the group, including regular training events and support for science press officers in recognition of the important role they play when science is in the news.

It was suggested that such training could be run by Stempra in coordination with other organisations, and Helen Jamison on the Stempra Committee has been investigating further; she’s recently been notified that funding for this training will be made available by BIS, which is fantastic news! Watch this space for updates.

A full copy of the report can be downloaded here http://interactive.bis.gov.uk/scienceandsociety/site/media/
