Stempra newsletter
From the Chair
The election is over. We have a new government and a new era ahead.
In this issue of the newsletter, Laure Thomas, previously press secretary to the ex-Minister for Universities and Science Lord Drayson, answers questions about her role at the heart of science policy and you – the readers – tell us what you were up to during the election period.
Meanwhile, Stempra has had a couple of great events. We had our own election – the Annual General Meeting – at which members of the committee were re-elected and we welcomed new members.
On the subject of government and science, we held a fascinating evening at the Science Media Centre with Professor David Nutt chaired superbly (if not completely impartially) by Fiona Fox, the SMC's Director. Professor Nutt gave a privileged Stempra audience an intimate and frank insight into his experience both in dealing with the media and at the hands of government.
While he unsurprisingly referred to the dangers of alcohol in no uncertain terms 'several times' during his talk, I have to say the evening sparked much heated debate among members and there was no other place to take these discussions other than the pub...
For those of you who like numbers, Hazel Lambert organised her second event aimed at helping us sort out our facts and figures - in a 'Statistics' special at the Wellcome Trust.
Obviously, these are very different styles of event and we're keen to gather feedback on what our members really want so do let us know if you're enjoying the events and do suggest future events or speakers you'd like to see Stempra hosting.
We look forward to seeing you at the next event.
Best wishes as ever.
