Embargo group searches for solution:
Embargoes: are they a help or a hindrance? Are they correctly applied and enforced? After a lively session at a conference this summer, the Association of British Science Writers (ABSW) has sprung into action. They have assembled a working group on embargoes which aims to discuss the issues raised and develop a code of best practice for their members on the proper use of the embargo system.
At the World Conference of Science Journalists, the fields of journalism, journals and PR clashed over whose property the embargo is anyway, what are appropriate sanctions when they get broken and where do we go from here. In order to capture the different sides of this debate, the working party are collecting current policies from leading journals. They will be writing to Stempra to invite us to survey our members’ views as well as collecting case studies from both Stempra and ABSW members.
Bob Ward and Ruth Francis from the Stempra committee will sit on this working group. Stempra members should be familiar with our own guide for press officers and can refer to it if they’re uncertain of embargoes and related issues.
The value of evaluation:
Stempra members may be familiar with media evaluation – but how should we measure our impact, and how often? Each organisation has different aims, campaigns, target media and messages and evaluations should take these into consideration before they even set out to investigate.
Analysing and circulating your results is a fantastic way to promote your team within your organisation. You could compare your coverage to the competition’s for a set period of time, count column inches in chosen media or take a deeper look at attitudes to a message or before and after your campaign. You can undertake evaluations internally or pay an agency to do the work for you but what are you trying to measure and why?
Stempra is organising an event in the spring to look at the value of evaluations. If you have had positive or negative experiences to report, or would like specific queries to be discussed, please contact Ruth Francis on ruth@stempra.org.uk
If you have any news, dates or announcements for the next issue of the Stempra newsletter, please contact Laura Nelson at newsletter@stempra.org.uk.
