Sci Comm news

One of Stempra's strengths is to give the science communication community heads up on what is going on in the field. Stempra does this through its e-list and through events which provide networking opportunities. In a new newsletter column we thought it would be a good idea to keep everyone up to date with staff changes in institutions, journalists who are moving jobs, funding opportunities, events and news. For the next issue it would be great if you could send us your news: please email cbithell@ri.ac.uk with any news you would like including before 30 November.

Royal Institution Refurbishment:

After nearly two years filled with dust and scaffolding, the newly-refurbished lecture theatre at the Royal Institution will open this autumn. Speakers will once again stand in the spots occupied by Faraday and Davy, and to help celebrate the new season of events, some of the biggest names in 21st-century science feature in the programme. Roger Penrose will talk about how materials called quasi-crystals could hold clues about quantum physics on 21 November. The Director, Susan Greenfield, will join forces with a couple of the UK's most well-known scientific figures this autumn, talking about brains and black holes with Martin Rees on 20 November, and interviewing Adam Hart-Davis about his life as a science author and broadcaster on 7 November. Of course, the programme will also include its usual mix of new science and interesting issues, like an evening on the science and ethics of cognitive enhancement.

The rest of the Ri will remain behind hoardings until the summer of 2008, when it will return with an expanded museum, a café, bar and restaurant, and one of central London's best venues available for hire. To find out more about our public events, or to investigate hiring us as a venue, visit www.rigb.org or call the Ri on 020 7409 2992.

Deadline for submitting proposals for next year's BA Festival is 12 October: http://www.the-ba.net/the-ba/Events/FestivalofScience/EventOrganisers/Getinvolved.htm

Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition 2008 - call for proposals - encourage your scientists!

The exhibition is a really great opportunity to promote your organisation's research to a wide audience. It's a chance for scientists to communicate their research, network with potential funders and have fun. Each year the society selects around 25 teams of the UK's foremost researchers in science and technology to showcase their research. In 2007, over 2,300 members of the public and over 1,500 post-16 students attended, while over 1000 people including scientists, policymakers, MPs, VIPs and the media attended the private evening events. Over 11,000 people visited the Exhibition online and many more found out about it though the extensive media coverage.

The 2008 Exhibition takes place from 30 June to 3 July at the Royal Society in London. The emphasis is on interactive, hands-on exhibits that will enthuse the general public about your research and science.

Proposals to exhibit are invited until 5 November. For more details, visit http://www.royalsoc.ak/exhibition2008 for an electronic proposal form - or if you have any questions, contact exhibition@royalsoc.ac.uk
