Stempra newsletter - Autumn 2006

No Stempra newsletter for ages and then two in quick succession. Sorry that the Stempra newsletter has been behaving like a London bus lately, but think we’ve got the electronic version under control now. In this month’s edition;

From the Chair … Shouldn’t we be celebrating the excellence of science PROs?
Juliet Upton reflects on the annual PR industry awards.

The impact of new media on PR
Does your new communication strategy need to feature blogging and podcasts? Lindsay Smith reports back on the CIPR event ‘Blogs and citizen journalism – how it is affecting PR?’

New media was also a hot topic at this year’s Science communication conference, reviewed for the Stempra newsletter by Barbara Davies

European news
In our new and hopefully regular feature Tim Reynolds-our man in Brussels - sends us his Eurochat - a flavour of the continental lifestyle, plus news and views on the internal machinations of our great European Institutions.

Peter Green updates us on the creation of a European support service for research PR through the Communiqué initiative.

Interview with Bob Ward
Bob Ward is leaving the Royal Society is leaving for a new job. Over the past seven years, Bob’s work has ensured that the UK’s most respected scientists have had their say in the media and in policy decisions on everything from climate change to stem cell biology. Claire Bithell asks him for his reflections on his time at the Royal Society and his views on the way the media portrays science.

Stempra Science in the news events
Stempra is running a new series of events to highlight the ways that different organisations have responded to being in the news and their tactics for getting their scientists’ views into the media.

“What inspired you?” was a survey of key thinkers in science, technology and medicine. The survey was conducted by spiked and Pfizer in order to provide insights into current challenges in science education and communication, and how these challenges might be overcome. The results are both thought-provoking and interesting and certainly provide some surprises. Take a look at Spiked Online.
