Crisis communications when lives are on the line
Simon MacDowall joined NATO in 1993 as the organisation was drawn into the Balkans conflict. He found himself in Bosnia as a NATO liaison officer charged with coordinating press lines between NATO and the UN. He went on to become the official spokesman in Sarajevo at the time of the first NATO air strikes in Bosnia. Simon has also served in Communications Director roles in some of the UK's top departments including the Department of Social Security, as it then was, the Department for Work and Pensions and the Ministry of Defence. Looking for a quieter life, Simon most recently took up the post of Director of Communications and Marketing at HMRC ... on the day the biggest government data loss story broke. At Stempra's latest event, come and listen to Simon and quiz him on how you manage some of the biggest news stories at home and abroad. How do you respond to a fast moving story where separating concrete knowledge from conjecture can be tough? And you can literally end up in the line of fire. And how do you lead an organisation through crisis comms on day one of a job when you barely know where the coffee machine is?
